Diego Nicolás Marset Alba is a Uruguayan criminal whose name became internationally known after his arrest by Brazil’s Federal Police in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, in December 2023. He is the brother of Sebastián Marset, a fugitive wanted in several countries, and was identified by Paraguayan authorities as a figure connected to the Primer Cartel Uruguayo. According to INTERPOL, Diego Marset was the subject of a Red Notice requested by Paraguay in connection with proceedings involving organized crime and drug trafficking.
Brazilian authorities arrested him at a residential property in Foz do Iguaçu after receiving intelligence that he had entered Brazil. INTERPOL reported that investigators had information that his wife, who is Bolivian, was approaching childbirth in the city. Police monitored the residence and arrested Marset when he arrived there. Brazilian authorities subsequently began the procedures related to his detention and possible extradition to Paraguay.
According to the Brazilian Federal Police, the investigation identified Marset as an alleged intermediary in transactions connected to his brother and criminal networks operating between Bolivia and Paraguay. Authorities said he had traveled between the two countries and was allegedly involved in arrangements concerning payments and logistics. These assertions were part of the investigation and should be distinguished from judicial convictions.
The case formed part of the broader international investigation known as Operation A Ultranza PY, conducted in Paraguay against organized crime and money laundering. INTERPOL described the operation as one of Paraguay’s largest investigations of its kind, involving numerous searches, arrest warrants and asset seizures.
Marset’s arrest demonstrated the international scope of the investigation surrounding his family and associates. His case also highlighted cooperation between police agencies in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and other countries through INTERPOL channels. At the time of his arrest, Paraguayan authorities were seeking him under a preventive detention order issued in 2022.
