Valdetário Carneiro: The Brazilian Criminal Who Became a Symbol of the “New Cangaço”

José Valdetário Benevides Carneiro, widely known as Valdetário Carneiro, was a Brazilian criminal from Rio Grande do Norte whose name became closely associated with organized bank robberies and violent crime in Brazil’s Northeast during the late 1990s and early 2000s. His activities and the operations of the group he led became the subject of extensive police investigations and media coverage across several states.

According to reporting by Tribuna do Norte based on police investigations, Valdetário commanded a group responsible for numerous attacks on banks during the period. The gang operated particularly in the western region of Rio Grande do Norte, with reported activity in municipalities including Caraúbas, Apodi, Macau and Umarizal. The scale and style of the group’s operations later became associated in Brazilian reporting with what came to be known as the “novo cangaço,” referring to heavily organized criminal groups carrying out attacks in smaller cities.

One of the most notable episodes occurred in Macau, Rio Grande do Norte, in June 2002. According to Tribuna do Norte, a large group simultaneously attacked three bank branches in the city. The operation resulted in the death of police chief Robson Luís de Medeiros Lira, while several members of the group were later arrested and convicted. Valdetário was identified by authorities as the leader of the group responsible for the operation.

Valdetário's history also included a period of imprisonment and a highly publicized escape from Alcaçuz prison in 2000. His subsequent activities made him one of the most sought-after criminals in the region. Contemporary and retrospective reporting described the extensive police effort to locate him and dismantle the group around him.

On December 10, 2003, Valdetário was killed during a police operation in the rural area of Lucrécia, in Rio Grande do Norte. Tribuna do Norte reported that he was surrounded by police and fatally shot during the confrontation. His death marked the end of the career of one of the most widely known criminal figures in the recent history of the state.

Years after his death, his life continued to receive attention through books, documentaries and journalistic investigations. A 2013 book about his life described the complex public image that developed around him, including the way his story became part of the folklore surrounding crime in the Northeast. Researchers interviewed more than 20 people while preparing the work, seeking to distinguish documented events from stories that had grown around his reputation.

Valdetário Carneiro remains a significant historical name in Brazilian crime reporting, particularly in accounts of the emergence of the “new cangaço” phenomenon in the Northeast.
