Francisco das Chagas Rodrigues de Brito: The Criminal Behind the “Emasculated Boys” Case

Francisco das Chagas Rodrigues de Brito is a Brazilian criminal whose name became permanently associated with the case known as the “Emasculated Boys” in Maranhão and Pará. He was arrested in late 2003 after investigators connected him to a series of disappearances and deaths involving boys in the region. In March 2004, Brazilian authorities reported that Brito had confessed to multiple killings under investigation. At that stage, however, the number of cases attributed to him remained subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. (agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br)

The case subsequently resulted in multiple criminal trials and convictions. In 2009, the Maranhão Public Prosecutor’s Office reported that Brito was sentenced to 36 years and six months for the deaths of two boys. Another conviction followed in 2010, when he received an additional 26 years for another homicide. In 2011, he was sentenced to a further 28 years and nine months in a separate case. These were among several convictions arising from the investigations. (mpma.mp.br) (mpma.mp.br)

The broader case involved dozens of children and adolescents whose deaths were investigated in Maranhão and Pará. The Maranhão Public Prosecutor’s Office has documented 28 victims in Maranhão and reported that Brito was ultimately sentenced to hundreds of years in prison across the different proceedings. The exact number of deaths associated with his name varies depending on whether the source is referring to documented convictions, confessions or the broader group of cases investigated. The case also had consequences beyond the criminal trials. Investigations into the deaths contributed to Brazil being brought before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, with the Maranhão Public Prosecutor’s Office later describing an agreement involving measures for the families of the victims. The case became an important reference in discussions about the protection of children and the response of public institutions to serious violence.

As of recent reporting, Brito remains imprisoned in Brazil. His case is remembered not only for the convictions entered against him but also for the broader institutional and human-rights consequences of the investigation.
