Sebastián Alberti Rossi: Uruguayan Convict and Fugitive Linked to the Marset Family

Sebastián Alberti Rossi is a Uruguayan convicted criminal whose name became internationally known after his family connection to Sebastián Marset, the Uruguayan organized-crime figure investigated across several South American countries. Alberti Rossi is married to Jimena Marset, Marset's sister. Recent reporting continues to identify him as serving a prison sentence in Uruguay.

His own criminal case predates his connection to the Marset family. In 2020, Alberti Rossi was initially prosecuted for attempted homicide after an assault in Uruguay. The victim later died, and the case was changed to homicide. He was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison.

Escape from prison

On April 3, 2021, while serving his sentence at the Juan Soler prison in the department of San José, Alberti Rossi escaped from custody. He had been authorized to take out the prison's rubbish and used the opportunity to flee. Uruguay's National Rehabilitation Institute subsequently investigated the circumstances of the escape, and disciplinary proceedings were opened against prison officials.

His escape resulted in an INTERPOL Red Notice connected to the homicide conviction. He remained outside custody for more than two years.

At the time of the escape, authorities did not publicly know that Alberti Rossi was connected to the Marset family. That relationship became known later, after investigations in the region focused on Sebastián Marset and people around him.

Connection to Sebastián Marset

Alberti Rossi's marriage to Jimena Marset placed him within the wider family circle of Sebastián Marset. In 2023, Bolivian authorities also investigated him in connection with alleged false identity documents and identified him as a possible participant in Marset's organization. Those claims were part of the Bolivian investigation and should not be confused with his established Uruguayan conviction.

Uruguayan authorities, meanwhile, emphasized that his immediate legal obligation was to return to prison and complete the sentence imposed in the homicide case.

Voluntary surrender

After more than two years as a fugitive, Alberti Rossi voluntarily surrendered to the police in San José on October 26, 2023. Prosecutors reached an abbreviated agreement with him concerning the prison escape. He admitted responsibility for self-escape (autoevasión) and received an additional eight-month prison sentence. He then returned to custody to serve the remaining portion of his homicide sentence.

In January 2024, Uruguay's Ministry of the Interior reported that five police officers connected with the Juan Soler prison had been subjected to disciplinary proceedings over the 2021 escape.

Current legal status

Recent Uruguayan reporting indicates that Alberti Rossi remains incarcerated and is serving the sentence resulting from his homicide conviction, together with the additional punishment for the prison escape. His documented criminal record therefore rests primarily on those judicial proceedings.

His alleged connection with the broader Marset organization should be described separately: Bolivian authorities investigated him and attributed a possible role within that network, but those allegations should not be presented as an additional conviction without a corresponding final judicial ruling.

Sebastián Alberti Rossi's story consequently combines a serious criminal conviction in Uruguay, a prison escape, years as a fugitive and a later connection by marriage to one of South America's most prominent organized-crime investigations.
