Jamile Xavier da Silva became known publicly in connection with the police operation that ended the life of Marcelo Johnny Viana Bastos, known as “Pica-Pau,” in Extremoz, Rio Grande do Norte, in July 2025.
Jamile was nineteen years old when she died. Brazilian media reports identified her as the girlfriend or companion of Marcelo Pica-Pau, who had been the main target of a major police operation in the city of Extremoz, in the Greater Natal area.
According to information released by investigators and reported by local media, Jamile had a more recent connection to the criminal organization under investigation. Police said she had been involved with Marcelo and that the house where the confrontation occurred was one of the places where the two met. Authorities also stated that investigators had used information connected to Jamile's movements while attempting to locate Marcelo. These statements were part of the police investigation and should not be treated as equivalent to a criminal conviction against her.
The operation began in late July 2025, when police went to a residence in the Portal do Sol area of Extremoz in an attempt to arrest Marcelo. He had been identified by authorities as a leading figure in a criminal organization referred to by police as “Novo Cangaço.” More than one hundred law-enforcement officers participated in the operation.
Jamile was inside the residence when the confrontation began. Reports state that she was injured during the operation and later died. Marcelo and another man, Cláudio Ferreira dos Santos, also died during the incident. Six police officers were injured.
The confrontation lasted more than twenty hours and became one of the most significant police operations in Rio Grande do Norte during 2025. Authorities reported that the residence was heavily damaged during the exchange of fire and that the operation involved prolonged attempts to negotiate Marcelo's surrender.
Jamile's presence at the scene attracted attention because of her reported relationship with Marcelo and because investigators had described her as a person of interest in the criminal network under investigation. However, the available reporting does not establish that she was convicted of the crimes attributed to the organization. For that reason, descriptions of her as a “criminal” or as a confirmed member should be presented as police allegations rather than established judicial facts.
Her death also illustrates how people connected to individuals under investigation can become involved in major police operations without necessarily having been convicted of criminal offenses themselves. In Jamile's case, the public record concerning her is substantially connected to the events surrounding the Extremoz operation.
As of the latest available reporting, Jamile Xavier da Silva is remembered primarily in connection with the July 2025 operation in Extremoz, where she died at nineteen years of age. The criminal investigations surrounding Marcelo Pica-Pau and the organization associated with him continued independently of her death.
