Esteban Lindor Alvarado: The Rosario Crime Boss Behind a Failed Helicopter Escape

Esteban Lindor Alvarado is one of the most prominent figures in the history of organized crime in Rosario, Argentina. His name became associated with a criminal organization involved, according to Argentine prosecutors, in drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering and other serious offenses.

Alvarado's rise in Rosario's criminal underworld preceded his confrontation with Los Monos, the organization associated with the Cantero family. Argentine authorities and media have described the two structures as rival criminal networks competing for influence in the city and surrounding areas.

His criminal record includes convictions in both provincial and federal courts. In June 2022, the Federal Oral Court No. 2 of Rosario sentenced Alvarado to fifteen years in prison for organizing the transportation of approximately 493.9 kilograms of marijuana to Río Negro in 2017. Separately, Santa Fe provincial justice sentenced him to life imprisonment for his participation in an aggravated homicide and convicted him of other offenses, including leading an illicit association and aggravated money laundering.

Money laundering became another important part of the judicial investigations surrounding Alvarado. In November 2024, the Federal Oral Court No. 2 of Rosario sentenced him to an additional five years in prison for laundering assets of illicit origin. The court also imposed a fine of more than 62 million Argentine pesos and ordered the confiscation of eight vehicles and shares in six transportation companies used in the laundering operations.

The case that brought Alvarado international attention came in March 2023, when investigators uncovered a plan to extract him from the Federal Penitentiary Complex I in Ezeiza using a helicopter.

According to Argentina's Public Prosecutor's Office, investigators received information about the escape plan on March 2, 2023. A Robinson R44 Raven helicopter was allegedly acquired for the operation, given a false registration and brought into Argentina from Paraguay. Investigators intercepted communications between Alvarado and a pilot and determined that the aircraft was supposed to approach the prison and take Alvarado and another inmate away.

The operation was planned for March 10. However, coordinated judicial measures and surveillance by the Federal Police prevented the escape. The helicopter departed from an airfield near Gualeguaychú but was forced to land in Francisco Álvarez, Buenos Aires Province, after suffering a mechanical problem. Police subsequently seized the aircraft and arrested suspected collaborators.

The failed escape led to additional federal proceedings. In 2023, Alvarado was placed in preventive detention and prosecuted for offenses connected with the attempted escape, the helicopter and its false registration. The prosecution also investigated the alleged involvement of other people in the operation.

The episode demonstrated that investigators believed Alvarado remained capable of communicating with people outside prison. Prosecutors stated that previous investigations had identified communications with individuals abroad who allegedly carried out activities connected to drug trafficking and related crimes under his direction. Those statements should be understood as part of the prosecution's investigative findings and distinguished from the convictions that have already become final.

The helicopter escape case continued to generate legal developments years later. In August 2026, Argentina's Federal Criminal Cassation Court overturned a previous decision that had removed the prosecution against one alleged collaborator from the escape investigation, allowing the proceedings against that individual to continue. The federal prosecutor's office also reiterated Alvarado's existing convictions, including the fifteen-year federal sentence and the five-year money-laundering conviction.

Alvarado's case therefore combines several major aspects of Argentina's organized-crime history: the rivalry between criminal networks in Rosario, investigations into drug trafficking and money laundering, and an extraordinary attempted prison escape involving an aircraft.

As of 2026, Esteban Lindor Alvarado remains imprisoned in Argentina under multiple convictions. His name continues to appear in federal and provincial judicial proceedings concerning organized crime and the failed 2023 escape.
